The Jazz Center of Bellingham is a non-profit organization that provides education and mentorship to aspiring musicians as well as presenting the best regional, national, and international artists. After refocusing and changing their name from “Whatcom Jazz Music Arts Center”, the Jazz Center of Bellingham wanted a fresh new look to reintroduce themselves to the community.
The logo is based on the 5 lines of the music staff, and can be elongated to fit different spaces. In this brand, I wanted to create a tension between order and chaos, similar to what exists in jazz music. Using bold contrasts in space and scale, and by layering typographic and abstract elements, I found a great balance for the posters and other printed materials. We also utilized a heavy halftone process for photographs which allows images taken by various people, sometimes of a poor resolution, to be visually consistent.
